All Star Batman #14 Review

Written by: Scott Snyder
Art by: Rafael Albuquerque, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands

“The First Ally” arc has really been the most important arc of this book and how fitting to end the run. This is the final issue of the series and just because Snyder’s been working on Metal, that hasn’t brought the quality of this book down. Let’s dive into All Star Batman #14 and see how well it truly holds up…

This is absolutely Alfred’s story but it’s still very important as a Batman series story. It reveals so much of Alfred’s past, how he’s gained so much knowledge and skills and is actually the one to pass it all on to Bruce. A lot of the cool tips and tricks of the trade are passed to him from Alfred’s time in the military and his time with Briar. It really makes Alfred and Bruce’s relationship stronger and solidifies Alfred as his true partner as he constantly needs him.

The most shocking revelation in this issue is that Briar’s dark knight is actually a clone of Alfred! It’s the best of him without the weaknesses hold holdbacks of love and family. Us as readers and Bruce think it was Briar’s son resurrected but that wasn’t the case at all and I love the twist here.

The pirate story motif is so much fun and it truly makes this story a modern swashbuckling adventure. It makes me that more wishful of an elseworlds story where Bruce embarks on a pirate adventure, captaining his own ship as Bat Beard. It sounds goofy but it would be so much fun, I think.

All Star Batman #14 is such a fun issue and a great conclusion to the run. This may be the last of the story in this format but I can’t wait for it to spiritually continue with Batman and The Signal. With great art, exciting adventure and amazing character development, this issue is highly recommendable, making this story arc the most important of the book.
